Homemade tortilla. This recipe makes soft and satisfying rolls for us. No preservative added and it’s cost saving. You can make your own tortilla for dinner, snack or for party anytime as you wish. Well, this recipe might not be the original Mexican tortillas, but I am sure it has the taste and texture that we are looking for.

 

Serves 10-12 tortillas

Ingredients :

  • 3 Cups wheat flour (tepung gandum)
  • 3 Tablespoon margarine (or butter/vegetable shortening)
  • 1.5 Teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 Teaspoon salt
  • 1 Cup Hot water (add additional 1/4 cup water if required)

Prepare the ingredients at room temperature.

It’s optional to use margarine/butter/ vegetable shortening.

 

 

 

Tortilla dough preparation

Mix all the dry ingredients, flour, baking powder, salt and margarine in a large bowl.

 

 

 

 

Tortilla dough scramble

Use your palm to mix them well and make as a crumbs. Then slowly add in the hot water into the flour mixture. You may use spatula to stir and mix the dough, as the water is hot. Once it’s little cool down, then knead the dough well for about 5-10 minutes.

Use 1 cup hot water or add a little more (1/4 cup). The kneaded dough should not be too dry, or very sticky. If it sticks little in your fingers, then it’s fine. Knead well till it become soft and subtle dough.

Divide the dough into 12 mini balls. Use a damp cloth or lid, cover the rolled dough and keep a side. Give it a rest for about 15-20 minutes.

Lightly floured the working board and rolling pin. Start roll the dough into thin and round shaped tortilla.
Roll as thin as possible.

Heat the pan, medium to high flame.

Place the rolled tortilla on the pan, cook for 30 seconds first, you will notice little bubble popping up. Immediately, turn over to the other side, cook for  about 20 seconds , then turn over it again. Make sure the flame is medium to high at this stage. You will notice the tortillas puff up with huge air pocket (as in picture). It’s done. Can transfer the tortilla to a container. Cover the cooked tortillas, to avoid it become dry.

 

perfect tortillasTips for soft tortillas : Cook in medium-high heat. Flip over the tortillas 3 times (each surface to cook 20-30seconds). Do not cook a piece for more than 2 minutes or in a very low heat.
